How Close Were Georgia And South Carolina Election's?

Friday, 23 Jun, 2017

Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., left, walks offstage after speaking at an election night party for Democratic candidate for 6th Congressional District Jon Ossoff in Atlanta, Tuesday, June 20, 2017.

Tuesday's highly-anticipated runoff was the most expensive House campaign in history, with a price tag of more than $50 million. But Trump won the district by only 1.5 percentage points in 2016, and his national approval rating now stands below 40 percent.

"Karen Handel won in a Republican district that was drawn for a Republican to win", Johnson told Elliot. "All the Fake News, all the money spent (equals) 0". Crowley chairs the House Democratic Caucus, and he says it's important to remember that Democrats in those four races were trying to flip Republican strongholds, districts handpicked by the White House as President Trump tapped members of Congress to serve in his administration.

Her tough race, combined with close GOP House victories in Kansas, Montana and SC, suggests Trump will dominate the coming election cycle, forcing Republicans to make peace with him, for better or worse. The Georgia election was seen as much closer, but last night's results didn't seem to bear that out. "Democrats have aimed to leverage Trump's dismal approval rating and opposition to the Republican health-care bill into winning Republican seats and potentially taking control of the House in 2018".

House Speaker Paul Ryan congratulated Handel on a "hard-earned" victory. Ossoff, whose campaign had been infused with $24 million from the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and $8 million from other contributors, had been the projected front-runner by pollsters. Republican Ralph Norman won the seat formerly held by Mick Mulvaney, the current director of the Office of Management and Budget.

The former Georgia secretary of state won by nearly 4 points, beating Jon Ossoff, a 30-year-old documentary filmmaker and former congressional staffer - 51.9 percent to 48.1 percent.

On Wednesday, Trump told the Iowa crowd that the southern border wall he promised to build - and make Mexico pay for - could feature solar panels.

"Big day tomorrow in Georgia and SC", he wrote.

According to Atlantic monthly, "Compared with November's results, the GOP margins of victory declined from almost 16 points to 6 in Montana, 23 points to less than 4 in Georgia, 21 points to 3 in SC, and 31 to about 7 in Kansas.

The Democratic frustration follows two special election defeats Tuesday. Democrats did manage to keep a safe seat in California's 34th in April.

Boosted by donations and volunteers from around the country, Ossoff dominated the special election's jungle primary.
