More than 300 bushfires in British Columbia have forced Canadian timber mills and gas pipelines to shut as hot, dry weather fans blazes across swaths of western Canada and the United States.
The fires have been fueled by a crop of grass that grew from welcomed spring rains.
The Williams Lake Tribune reported that more than 5,000 people registered with Emergency Support Services in Williams Lake on Tuesday after the city and fringe areas were put on evacuation alert Monday evening. "Most of those who have evacuated have not registered".
Glen Burgess of the BC Forest Service said he was optimistic about the progress made on the 150 Mile fire, particularly in the residential areas. The fires have burned over 40,000 hectares (100,000 acres) of land.
The blaze in the grassy foothills of the Sierra Nevada has burned almost 9 square miles (23 square kilometers) and injured four firefighters. Four firefighters were injured in the blaze that has destroyed at least three dozen homes as of Tuesday, the AP reports.
Winds out of the southeast are pushing the fire away from Santa Barbara and toward Santa Ynez, authorities said.
The fight against a wildfire that temporarily forced the evacuation of hundreds of people near the resort town of Breckenridge, Colorado, is winding down.
"It's going to be pretty hectic out there, but I guess we'll be working long days and lugging a lot of hose around and doing whatever they need us to do", she said. The blaze has been contained, except for a portion that continues to burn in rugged, steep terrain.
Wildfires are burning in California, Nevada, Arizona, Montana, Oregon and Washington.
