No. 5 Oklahoma exacts revenge from No. 2 Ohio State

The hype machine was spinning around USC's Sam Darnold all offseason, and then he threw two interceptions and no touchdown passes in the opener against Western Michigan.

Looking back to last week... Start him in games against Army, UNLV and Rutgers during the next three weeks, but also take a look at how the offense moves with backup Dwayne Haskins at the controls.

Mayfield's emotional gesture came after the No. 5 Sooners knocked off the No. 2 Buckeyes 31-16. He was one of the players who went in later in the game, after some other Sooners had gotten injured.

The Sooners came up with a key stop to start the fourth quarter, forcing an Ohio State incompletion on fourth down from the Oklahoma 36-yard line to regain possession. About 80 percent of the country picked Ohio State to win.

Haskins, a redshirt freshman, is supposed to be the future of the Ohio State offense. Only Ohio State (40 times), Alabama (39), Florida (37) and Florida State (33) have been featured more often than OU. The Buckeyes never established the run - or displayed much consistency on the ground - despite possessing what looks to be one of the nation's top 1-2 punches in freshman J.K. Dobbins and sophomore Mike Weber.

For as good as Bryant looked Sunday, Clemson's title defense will presumably hinge on its defense, which was fifth in yards allowed per play a year ago (4.6), and tied for first in yards allowed per pass (5.6).

Each of Oklahoma's first six drives reached Ohio State territory, but the Sooners couldn't capitalize.

Ohio State's running game? The schedule still has three potential top-10 teams on it. Heading into the weekend, Penn State is ranked No. 4, MI is No. 8 and No. 9 Wisconsin - should the Buckeyes and Badgers find their way to the Big Ten championship game - would be a third. That game, like this one between the second-ranked Buckeyes and fifth-ranked Sooners, was a top-five matchup.

Capitalizing on turnovers and multiple Sooner offensive injuries, the Buckeyes scored 21 straight to take the lead midway through the third quarter of play.

Oklahoma didn't lose a game after that, reeling off 11 consecutive victories.

6 — Utah's winning streak against BYU in the Holy War rivalry, longest for the Utes in the series since the 1950s.

For all of the talk about Ohio State's defensive line heading into the game, it was the Sooners' defense that had the edge.

No. 4 PENN ST. 33, PITTSBURGH 14: In State College, Pennsylvania, Trace McSorley threw for three touchdowns, including Saquon Barkley's 46-yard catch-and-run, for the Nittany Lions.

Baker Mayfield was almost flawless last week against UTEP.

"We felt like we were close offensively and we were playing so well defensively", Riley said. Mayfield finished the game completing 27 of his 35 passes for 386 yards and three touchdowns.

Either way, Ohio State's offense machine - with the exception of a second-half performance against inferior IN in the season-opener - has run about smoothly as a gasoline engine filled with diesel fuel. The Cardinal was 52nd in yards allowed per completion (12.2), but the Trojans offense was actually just 85th itself (11.8). His 4/4 touchdown-to-interception ratio doesn't look great, but he is connecting on 75% of his passes against two tough opponents.
