More flights canceled as hurricanes hit regions

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport will be closed Saturday and Sunday, with the last flight departing at 7.45pm (19:45) Friday.

The cheapest flight on Delta on the same route on Friday was $550.

Amid accusations of price gouging, various airways announced that they were capping ticket costs, relaxing scheduling procedures or waiving additional fees as people scrambled to leave the region.

Irma, a Category 5 storm and one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes recorded in history, has torn through several Caribbean islands and is heading toward South Florida.

According to the FAA, air traffic controllers will remain on duty and will have to take shelter in nearby buildings and lower levels of the control tower. The airport tweeted that it will "cease commercial airline operations" at 8 p.m. Saturday.
