Power surge lifts Yankees past Twins in AL Wild Card Game

Wednesday, 04 Oct, 2017

Jacoby Ellsbury will be the designated hitter for the New York Yankees in the AL wild-card game, with manager Joe Girardi keeping Chase Headley and Matt Holliday on the bench. NY won all five of Severino's September starts. The Bronx crowd was wired, and this seemed to fuel starter Luis Severino.

The Yankees will be hopeful that the home field advantage in tonight's game will be enough to get them through. The final line on Severino was 1/3 of an inning, 4 hits, 3 earned runs, 1 walk and 2 home runs.

The victor of tonight's game will travel to Cleveland for a seven-game series against the defending American League champs.

The Rockies enter the playoffs for just the fourth time in team history.

This game is against the Yankees.

It was the shortest start in an elimination-game postseason start since Gil Heredia lasted just one out in Game 5 of the 2000 ALDS for the Oakland A's against Derek Jeter's Yankees. He's forced more ground balls than nearly anyone else (more than half of his contact) and allowed fewer home runs (fewer than one per nine innings).

To kick off the postseason this year, the Twins and the Yankees will face off at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night, with the first pitch scheduled for 8:09 PM ET. The Minnesota Twins take on the New York Yankees in the big apple. Maybe he can do it again. Over the last five years they are 10-23 against NY.

Are the Yankees a better team than the Twins?

Despite the fact that Tuesday will be his first career playoff game, Severino (14-6, 2.98 ERA) is confident, having had a bounce-back year after struggling in 2016, a season in which he was 0-8 with an 8.50 ERA in 11 starts. They hold a record of 90-33 against Minnesota dating back to 2002.

Gregorius got the Yankees right back in the game after Severino was booed off the mound for allowing three runs and four hits. NY has the better No.1 starting pitcher in Luis Severino, who would be in contention for the AL Cy Young award if it weren't for Corey Kluber and Chris Sale.

How good is the Yankees' bullpen? Whatever energy was being charged since NY claimed the home advantage for this game left with Dozier's swing. Minnesota's bullpen ranks 22nd with a 4.40 ERA. This was before David Robertson would show up in the third, asked to pick up Green with the bases loaded the way Green had picked up Severino.

The Yankees also have an insanely good bullpen to work with, holding the most fWAR among a group of relievers in baseball this year at 9.2, 0.6 wins more than second-place Cleveland. Gregorius charged around the bases, and Yankee Stadium roared louder than ever before. NY is -130 on the -1.5 runline, while Minnesota is +110 on the +1.5 runline.

NY needed four games to beat Minnesota in both the 2003 and 2004 ALDS. It's the Yankees, who have simply owned the Twins in the postseason. The Yankees won four of six games in the season series including the last three contests.
